VEGA COLOUR GROUP
On 18 August 2008, Vega signed a LowCO2 Emissions Monitoring Contract and Certification Plan with The Carbon Reduction Institute who Vega had commissioned to develop the most effective strategy for offsetting its carbon footprint.
Through conducting a greenhouse emissions audit, the Carbon Reduction Institute established a “LowCO2” greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory for Vega. This included emissions from waste, energy usage, staff ground travel and flights. This inventory excludes upstream emissions from the supply of products and services to Vega.
Vega has already initiated a number of emission reduction measures including:
Energy Reduction - Power factor correction systems installed. - Light Eco Units installed - Thermal insulation of factory roof with SkyCool coating
Landfill waste volume cut by 50%
- Extensive recycling of paper and cardboard - Rubber printing blankets recycled to make thong footwear - Aluminium printing plates recycled - Wooden pallets recycled or removed for chipping - Re-use of large plastic ink containers in collaboration with suppliers - Onscreen proofing to avoid unnecessarily creating hard copies
Other initiatives
- Water for printing process recycled, reducing water use by almost half - Alcohol-free printing process reduces chemical waste and water use - Replacement of mineral inks by soy-based inks
Green credentials
- ISO 14001: 2004 (Environmental Management Systems) Certification. - Greenprint Certification - Forest Stewardship Council Chain of Custody Certification - Eco-Buy membership
Vega has committed to offsetting 100% of the emissions identified in the LowCO2 audit and has gone further by offering all its customers carbon neutral printing services through the commissioning of a comprehensive online calculator which can quantify the emissions produced per printing job based on a range of inputs. Vega are currently offering carbon calculations to its clients using the calculator and will make the calculator available for public use shortly.
